Children of Aida and Beit Jibrin

BETHLEHEM, West Bank — Children from Bethlehem’s Aida and Beit Jibrin refugee camps talk to Mondoweiss about their life in the camps. Filmmakers Sheren Khalel …and Abed al Qaisi wanted to know exactly how much the children understood about the military occupation going on around them, and how normal they believed their lives were. With their parents permission, Khalel and al

RIP to beautiful Abdulrahman Obeidallah

These pictures of Abdulrahman Obeidallah were taken this summer at the PfP playground opening ceremony at the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem. Abdul was full of joy and wonder, and did not stop beaming the entire day as he played on the only playground he has ever known. The Israeli soldiers shot and killed him while he was coming home from school. PfP unequivocally condemns the targeting of innocent Palestinian children, and the tragic loss of life of any and all children. Abdul

Recent visit to Nahr el Bared

This was the first opportunity PfP had to visit the playground since its establishment in 2009. PfP founder, Susan Abulhawa, was delighted to report back that the playground looks great and the kids are getting great use out of it. Susan took the opportunity, while in Lebanon, to visit the camp and spend some time with the kids at Nahr el Bared. It was then she noticed that there is a tremendous need for youth facilities and activities and Nahr el Bared remains horribly impoverished. But thankfully due to

Support Playgrounds For Palestine (with your feet or with your wallet)

Playgrounds for Palestine (PfP) is always looking for exciting new ways to raise much needed funds to build playgrounds for children in Palestine. This year is no exception, as PfP founder Susie Abulhawa will put on her racing shoes and run this year’s Philadelphia Half Marathon on September 21st. http://www.ingphiladelphiadistancerun.com/home.html And in case Abulhawa hasn’t put her body through a grueling enough experience in September, on November 23rd she and veteran Palestinian-American journalist (former Al Jazeera producer, and current Editor-in-Chief of the Palestine Chronicle) Ramzy Baroud will then run

Remembering Salah Ajarma, our beloved brother

On July 14th, Playgrounds for Palestine joined friends and family to remember Salah Ajarma, our dear friend, comrade, and brother who passed away in April 2021. Salah was an integral member of PfP and over the years he became family to all of us. He was a man of integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment to justice and his country. He dedicated his life to empowering his community, especially young people, and in the process created a school, a kindergarten, and spectacular community center in the heart of Aida refugee camp, where young people could go for recreation, music, art and dance lessons, after school help, and more. He touched so many lives, and all of us are better people for having known him. We miss him terribly, but we will continue in the

Play, while it cannot change the external realities of children’s lives, can be a vehicle for children to explore and enjoy their differences and similarities and to create, even for a brief time, a more just world where everyone is an equal and valued participant.
